The Haunted Hamburger occupies a two-story building on Clark Street — effectively the Main Street area, steps from the heart of Jerome's commercial district. It's impossible to miss: the building has signage that leans into the town's ghost-town identity, and on weekends a line of people waiting outside makes the spot obvious before you even read the name.
The building has two distinct seating experiences. The main floor is a standard casual American diner setup — wooden tables, medium lighting, the full menu. The upper deck is different: open-air, with an unobstructed view of the Verde Valley dropping 1,500 feet below. On a clear day it's one of the most dramatic lunch settings in Arizona. Request the upper deck when you arrive — it's not always offered automatically.

The Green Chile Cheeseburger — What Makes It Work
The green chile cheeseburger is the Haunted Hamburger's signature and Jerome's most-discussed dish. It works because the components are in proportion: the patty is hand-formed and cooked with enough char to hold its own against the chiles, the green chiles are roasted (not jarred), and the cheese melts consistently. It tastes like it was built for the altitude and the setting.
The sweet potato fries are worth ordering alongside — they're cut properly and the sweetness offsets the smoky chile heat. The onion rings are also consistently good and frequently mentioned by regulars. Skip the standard fries; the sweet potato version is the right call here.
Beyond the signature, the menu covers standard American grill territory: other burger variations, sandwiches, salads, and a breakfast sandwich option (available on weekends). None of it is destination eating on its own, but none of it is bad. Order the green chile cheeseburger unless you have a specific reason not to.

The Upper Deck — Jerome's Best Lunch View
The upper deck is the reason to eat here rather than taking food to go. Jerome sits at 5,000–5,400 feet on Cleopatra Hill, and the Verde Valley floor is roughly 1,500 feet below. From the upper deck, you can see the valley spread out in front of you — farmland, the Verde River corridor, and the mesa edge beyond. On clear days the view extends 30+ miles.
Specify upper deck when you arrive. It fills faster than the main floor and is not always the default seating assignment. In high summer (July–August), afternoon thunderstorms roll through the Verde Valley around 3–4 PM, and watching them from the deck is legitimately spectacular — though you may get moved inside if lightning is close.
Upper deck tip: the view is better from the rail-side tables than the wall-side tables. Ask to be seated at the rail if possible.
How to Beat the Wait (and When to Give Up)
The Haunted Hamburger is Jerome's most-visited restaurant in a town with only five restaurants total. On peak weekends (May through October), the lunch rush between 11 AM and 2 PM is substantial.
