Heat Advisory — Read Before You Plan
Air temperatures in Page regularly reach 105–115°F June through August. Canyon walls, paved surfaces, and houseboat decks radiate additional heat. Any land-based hiking or walking — Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, the Horseshoe Bend parking lot — should be completed before 9 AM or after 6 PM. Heat advisories are common and carry genuine risk. This is not a metaphor for "it's a bit warm." Water temperature exhibits thermal inversion by late summer — the surface layer can reach 85°F+ while deeper water stays cooler; jumping into the reservoir from the houseboat deck is the primary relief.
Lowdown Verdict
Summer is the most popular time to visit Lake Powell — and the hardest to do well. The houseboat experience peaks here: water at 80–85°F, all marinas fully operational, kids out of school. But everything requires months of advance planning, extreme heat management, and accepting that Antelope Canyon tours are unavailable without a booking made in January. If you already have reservations, summer is spectacular on the water. If you don't, look at May or September instead.

The Water Temperature Inversion
Most travel guides describe Lake Powell's summer water as uniformly warm. This is partially true and partially misleading. By late July and August, the surface layer of the reservoir can reach 84–87°F — warmer than most swimming pools. However, the thermocline (the boundary between warm surface water and cooler deep water) typically sits at 15–25 feet below the surface. Drop below it on a dive and the temperature can fall to 65–70°F within a few feet of the thermocline boundary.
This matters for swimmers: young children and those sensitive to sudden temperature changes should stay in the upper layer. It matters for houseboaters: the warm surface water makes anchoring in a cove and swimming directly from the deck the primary all-day activity when air temps exceed 110°F. Any shade on deck plus the option to drop into 80°F water makes summer houseboat visits tolerable and even enjoyable — just accept that all your land activities happen before 9 AM.
Summer Planning: The Non-Negotiables
- Houseboat rentals: Book by January for July and August. Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends sell out faster — sometimes by November the prior year. Wahweap, Bullfrog, and Antelope Point marinas all fill. Check current water elevation — launch ramp availability varies by level.
- Antelope Canyon tours: Both Upper and Lower are sold out days (sometimes weeks) in advance throughout June–August. If you have not booked a tour before arriving in Page, assume you are not going. Book through a Navajo-licensed operator at least 4–8 weeks ahead. See Tours.
- Horseshoe Bend timing: Arrive before 8 AM or after 6 PM. The parking lot fills by 9 AM in summer; the rim is exposed sun with no shade. Midday photography produces washed-out images. Morning and late afternoon produce the best golden-hour light over the river bend.
- Monsoon awareness (July–August): The North American Monsoon brings afternoon thunderstorms to the Colorado Plateau mid-July through mid-September. Storms build rapidly over the canyon country. Flash flood risk in slot canyons (Wire Pass, Cathedral Wash) is extreme during this window — do not enter any slot canyon during monsoon season without checking weather for the entire upstream watershed.
- Sunscreen and hydration: At 110°F with direct sun bouncing off the reservoir surface, sunburn happens in under 20 minutes without SPF 50+ protection. Bring significantly more water than you think you need. Dehydration at this temperature is rapid and serious.
