What to Expect in Spring
April opens cool — nights drop into the 40s°F — but warm rapidly through May. By late April, daytime temps consistently reach the mid-70s to low 80s°F, ideal for hiking at any hour of day. Water temperature lags behind air temperature; expect 65–72°F in the upper reservoir, slightly warmer in shallower coves where the sun warms enclosed water. Swimming is possible and invigorating, though not the warm bath of July and August.
Snowmelt from the Rocky Mountains and Colorado River headwaters begins feeding the reservoir in earnest through April and May. The reservoir's seasonal high-water mark typically arrives later in the runoff season — often June or into July in recent years — and the exact timing shifts from year to year with snowpack and dam operations. This means more navigable water and more accessible side canyons as the season progresses, but launch ramp status still depends on the current elevation and is not guaranteed. Always check the current elevation and ramp status at the Bureau of Reclamation gauge before arrival.
The surrounding canyon country blooms in April and into early May. Globe mallow (orange), penstemon (red-pink), and desert willow bring rare color to the sandstone terrain visible from Horseshoe Bend and along the Wire Pass approach road. This is a narrow window — the blooms peak in April and fade by mid-May as temperatures climb.

- Houseboating: Best availability and pricing before the summer premium. Book 4–8 weeks out for May weekends. Marina operating status varies with lake level — confirm which marinas and ramps are active before booking (check the Bureau of Reclamation gauge above).
- Antelope Canyon tours: Light-beam visibility strengthens as the sun angle climbs through spring into early summer — ask your Navajo-licensed tour operator about the current beam window. Tours are bookable 2–3 weeks ahead in April (not the months-ahead scramble of June–August).
- Wire Pass / Buckskin Gulch: April–May is the prime window, ahead of monsoon season. Arizona's monsoon season officially runs June 15–September 30 (National Weather Service), and flash flood risk in slot canyons rises with it — by June that risk is already climbing, so earlier spring is the safer bet. Buy the Utah BLM day permit at recreation.gov, or pay at the trailhead self-pay kiosk.
