Grand Canyon Shuttle Buses: Every Route, Stop, and Season

The 4 Routes at a Glance

All routes are free with park admission. Shuttles are wheelchair accessible, with audio and visual stop announcements and priority seating. They run on propane/CNG to reduce emissions inside the canyon corridor.

Blue Village Route

Year-round · 4 AM–11 PM peak season · 12–15 min loop

The Village Route is the backbone of in-park transit. It connects the main Visitor Center and Mather Point area with the historic village, lodges, and Market Plaza in a continuous loop. Stops include:

• Grand Canyon Visitor Center (main hub)
• Mather Point overlook access
• Yavapai Geology Museum
• Market Plaza (Canyon Village Market, post office, bank)
• Maswik Lodge
• Bright Angel Lodge and Trailhead
• El Tovar and Verkamp’s Visitor Center
• Village Route Transfer (connection point for Red route)

Runs 4 AM to 11 PM in peak season (May through September), with slightly reduced hours in shoulder seasons. The Visitor Center publishes current hours at the information desk. Frequency is typically every 12–15 minutes at peak times, stretching to 20–30 minutes early morning and late evening.

Most visitors staying at village lodges use this route daily. If you park at Mather Lot 1–4, this is how you reach the lodges and trailheads without moving your car.

Orange Kaibab Rim Route

Year-round · South Kaibab access only via shuttle

The Kaibab Rim Route is the most important shuttle for hikers. South Kaibab Trailhead is closed to private vehicles year-round — this shuttle is the only motorized way to reach it. Stops include:

• Grand Canyon Visitor Center
• South Kaibab Trailhead (only access)
• Yaki Point overlook
• Pipe Creek Vista

The ride from Visitor Center to South Kaibab Trailhead takes approximately 10 minutes. Frequency is every 15–20 minutes in season. Many hikers take the first Orange shuttle of the day (typically around 4:30–5 AM in summer) to beat the heat on the South Kaibab Trail.

Red Hermits Rest Route

March 1–November 30 only · 8 miles / 9 viewpoint stops

The Hermits Rest Route serves the 8-mile Hermit Road, which is closed to private vehicles from March 1 through November 30. During this period, the shuttle is the only motorized access to 9 west-facing viewpoints — the best sunset territory on the South Rim. All 9 stops in order from east to west:

2. Trailview Overlook
3. Maricopa Point
4. Powell Point
5. Hopi Point (best sunset viewpoint on the rim)
6. Mohave Point
7. The Abyss
8. Pima Point
9. Hermits Rest (Mary Colter 1914 stone shelter)

The shuttle stops at every point on request — signal the driver. You can hop on and off at any stop to spend time at a viewpoint, then catch the next bus (every 15–20 minutes). This makes it easy to spend an afternoon moving point to point toward Hermits Rest and riding back.

Bikes on the Hermits Rest Route

Bikes are allowed on Hermit Road year-round. In season (Mar 1–Nov 30), bikers share the road surface with shuttle buses — yield when buses pass. The shuttle accommodates 2 bikes per bus on exterior racks, first-come. This lets you ride one-way (usually downhill/west toward Hermits Rest) and load your bike on the shuttle for the return. Purple Tusayan Route

Summer only (mid-May to early September)

The Tusayan Route connects the town of Tusayan (7 miles south of the South Rim entrance) with the main Visitor Center. It runs only in summer and is the park-and-ride solution for visitors staying in Tusayan hotels or RV parks. Stops include:

• IMAX Theater parking lot (Tusayan, main boarding point)
• Tusayan hotels and RV park
• Grand Canyon Visitor Center

The strategic value of the Purple route: if you are staying in Tusayan, you can drive to the IMAX lot (free parking), board the shuttle, and arrive at the Visitor Center without ever dealing with the entrance station backup or Mather Lot competition. Exact summer start and end dates shift slightly year over year. The Visitor Center publishes the current Tusayan Route schedule at the information desk and at recreation.gov. Generally active from mid-May through Labor Day weekend.

When to Take the Shuttle vs. Drive

Most visitors assume they need to use the shuttle for everything, or that they can drive everywhere. Neither is true. Here is the practical breakdown:

The shuttle is genuinely convenient for the village area in summer when parking is scarce — park once at the Visitor Center and ride for the rest of the day. Accessibility

All Grand Canyon shuttle buses are wheelchair accessible. Features include:

• Kneeling ramp or lift at every bus
• Priority seating near the door for mobility devices
• Audio announcements of upcoming stops
• Visual display screens with stop names (not all buses)
• Accessible boarding at all major shuttle stops

Visitors with accessibility needs can also request a free accessibility permit at the Visitor Center that allows private vehicle access to certain otherwise-restricted roads. Ask a ranger at the Visitor Center information desk on arrival.
