Carl Hayden Visitor Center
The Carl Hayden Visitor Center is located directly at Glen Canyon Dam on US-89, approximately 2 miles west of downtown Page. It is operated by the Bureau of Reclamation in collaboration with the National Park Service and Glen Canyon Conservancy, sits within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and is free to enter. The exhibits cover the dam's construction history, the Colorado River water management system it controls, the mechanics of hydroelectric power generation, and the pre-dam archaeology and ecology of Glen Canyon -- the canyon that now lies beneath Lake Powell.
The visitor center has windows and viewing areas that look out at the dam face and the canyon below. Do not stop your vehicle on the bridge itself to look at views. Traffic on US-89 moves at highway speed and stopping in a travel lane is both illegal and dangerous. Park in the visitor center lot and cross on foot using the pedestrian walkway. For a second, land-based view of the dam, the National Park Service maintains a Dam Overlook Trailhead on Scenic View Drive about 1.5 miles south of the visitor center, where metal handrails run down uneven rock steps to the viewpoint -- the NPS asks visitors not to climb on the walls or rocks there.
Guided Dam Tours
The Bureau of Reclamation, working with Glen Canyon Conservancy, offers guided tours inside Glen Canyon Dam. Because the dam is an active federal power-generating facility, tours are subject to security requirements -- confirm what identification, bag rules, and screening the current tour requires at the time you book, rather than finding out at the door. What Glen Canyon Dam Does
Glen Canyon Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam on the Colorado River. Construction began with the first blast in October 1956, the last concrete was placed in September 1963, the first power was generated in September 1964, and the dam was formally dedicated in September 1966. At 710 feet above bedrock, it is the second highest concrete-arch dam in the United States, behind Hoover Dam at 726 feet. The most logical three-stop sequence for context and logistics is: Carl Hayden Visitor Center in the morning (before the summer heat peaks and while the visitor center is freshly opened), then Horseshoe Bend (about 5 miles south on US-89, then a 1.5-mile round-trip hike on a hardened path), then an afternoon Antelope Canyon tour.
This sequence puts the dam's context -- the story of how Lake Powell was created -- before you see the canyon and lake that resulted from it. Understanding the dam's function first makes the boat tour or houseboat experience on the reservoir more coherent.
